SAIL - Bakaro Steel

The SAIL Bokaro Steel Plant is the fourth largest integrated public sector steel plant in India and was established in 1964 having later merged with the state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).

Sector: manufacturing

The plant, based in Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, provides a comprehensive service, distributing and processing the full complement of special steels, stainless steels and speciality steel products to most sectors of industry.

Business challenge

As a large and well established company, Bokaro faced a growing number of IT challenges including an obsolete desktop PC hardware infrastructure that was proving unreliable and costly to maintain.

Solution and benefits

After conducting a series of competitor hardware tests, Bokaro finally selected the VXL ‘Itona’ range of desktop thin clients, in particular, TC4321, TC4621 and DS21 series with Windows Embedded Xpe operating system. In particular, Bokaro were impressed with VXL’s comprehensive pre-sales and technical support as well as the impressive product performance throughout the testing phase.

Importantly, the switch to VXL thin clients has also had a beneficial effect on the company’s annual IT capital and maintenance expenditure and due to thin client’s lower power consumption, also ensured greater power consumption savings.

Summary

“Not only was the outstanding product performance very impressive, but it was also VXL’s support throughout the hardware selection process that was also first class” a company spokesperson added.

Bokaro to date has deployed over sixty VXL desktop thin clients across its business site and its hardware refresh strategy is to eventually replace all aging desktops with VXL thin client devices as the business fulfils its growth plans.
